Service provider Orange in partnership with Infonet a Kenya based innovations group working towards improving interactions between government, civil society and citizens through ICTs, will power the Wi-Fi access to be provided to residents of Nakuru town, giving them free access to the internet.
For the first time in Kenya, the milestone will see Nakuru Town provide free Wi-Fi to its residents in the country and comes in third in Africa after Kigali, Rwanda and Cape Town, SouthAfrica and the sixteenth globally.
Nakuru county government and the statehouse Digital team is in line with Orange's strategy of enhancing the use of its infrastructure to offer value added Data &Voice solutions to the counties. In the project first phase, the Wi-Fi connection will work with a 10 kilometer radius covering Nakuru's Central Business District (CBD) and will later extend to other parts of the town.
The provision of free wireless internet to the counties across the country will help in making the counties more accessible for business as well as assist the county governments improve their service offering through integrated ICT solutions.
With seven base stations in Nakuru town, users will be allowed 24-hour unlimited data usage. Movie downloads and visits to adult sizes will however be restricted.
