Tech giant, Microsoft will now provide low-cost connectivity connecting rural areas to broadband in Africa and other three continents thanks to the launch of new TV white space partnerships and projects.

spectraLink wireless and Facebook having partnered in the project will conduct a joint technology research to understand how TV white space spectrum equipment can support wireless internet users today in order to deploy wireless networks covering entire campus in Ghana, which is among 10 countries conducting pilots.

The frequency bands generally set aside for television transmissions will be utilized for a range of applications that include; improving in-building networks, creating hotspots for internet access and offloading mobile traffic. The move definitely places Africa in the grid for Global competitiveness in which it will facilitate access to technology for the masses and to empower African students, entrepreneurs, developers and others to become even more active global citizens.

Being part of Microsoft's 4Africa Initiative, the core agenda is to provide access to the network coupled with productivity and communications applications as well as internet enabled devices with the TV white space-enabled radios and other wireless technologies to connect buildings to ensure access to fast broadband.

Besides Africa, Asia is also an up-coming continent where Microsoft has helped pioneer white spaces pilots as well as in Latin, America where the region's white spaces pilot in Uruguay. Microsoft is also working with Ofcom in the UK on a pilot in Glasgow
