Liquid telecom Rwanda has plans underway under the Africa expansion project to build internet infrastructure to connect 3,500 homes and commercial buildings to the internet by the end of year 2014. This is in connection with Rwanda's strategic geographical position to serve as an internet hub for the region.
The company is looking to increase internet penetration levels from only 25 per cent in the region in order to establish high standard internet speed which will enable better business relations across boundaries. Liquid Telecom is also constructing a fibre optic cable network across Southern Africa covering Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The $34 million investment will emphasize on internet as a two-way process which people upload content as much as they download, instead of the usual focus of the internet as a one way. According to Sam Nkusi Chief Executive Officer, the introduction of fourth generation Long-Term Evolution will be able to reach the untapped areas of the country and a provide a platform that will ease day to day operations.
Countries in the East African region are looking to establish the 4G services to provide the 10 times high speed internet, value added services among other advantages and impacts the service will have on the region.
Liquid Telecom second after MTN Rwanda in revenue earned and Internet bandwidth has so far laid 46 Km of underground fibre optic cable in Kigali and will lease some ducts from the government on a long-term basis. Liquid has about 20,000 km of pan African fiber built and running live traffic with further construction projects underway. This will also see east and central African capitals connect on common grounds.
