Kenya has come a long way digitally. Forget service automation, online content was only reserved for a few back then. Blogs and for that matter rich content blogs were a big deal with limited audience and reach. Today, online penetration has grown wide considering the grown use of smart phones and wireless networks therefore evolved online content.

Samsung has reiterated its commitment to the dissemination of locally relevant content by supporting upcoming and accomplished bloggers. Since August, the global electronics manufacturer has been running the Samsung Blogger Challenge and plans to do so until December 2014, with each month having a unique challenge for a particular product category.

The giant manufacturer has pointed out the initiative as appreciation of the work by the blogging community as more corporates begin to engage them in the co-creation of content that will appeal to Kenyans. This will motivate bloggers who stand a chance to benefit from the challenge.

Bloggers who participate in the monthly challenge and complete all the weekly missions will stand a chance to be the Blogger of the Month and will win two Samsung Electronics Products, one for their stellar efforts and another for their online community. The ultimate blogger shall be selected from the Bloggers of the Month.

The challenge calls for quality content, aggressive writers, competent blogs and content that the audience can relate to. In a previous series of challenges, Chandni Solanki emerged the winner of the Food Blogger Challenge, the first of five challenges. The challenge tested the participant's skills in preparation of meals exclusively using a microwave oven.

The four participants included Naomi Mutua(akenyangirl.com), Wendy Wahito (wendywahito.com), Chandni Solanki (pikachakula.com) and Jessica Irauka (leotunapika.com). Each week, the bloggers were given a themed mission to come up with two recipes. For instance, the Tasty Sunrise Mission required the bloggers to creatively prepare breakfast recipes. Other missions included Return of the Lunch BoxDevilish Delights and Honey, What's for Dinner.

From the recipes prepared by the contestants, Samsung will compile an online 15-recipe microwave cookbook. This will be a first in Kenya since most of the microwave cookbooks available to consumers are published in the West.

According to the latest quarterly report by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), mobile data contributed 99 per cent of the 13.3 million data subscriptions in the country. Many individuals read blogs at their convenient space. Traffic snarl ups are no longer lounging venues; most commuters are always engrossed to their devices reading something new. Blog Readers almost can't keep abreast of the huge online content at their exposure considering the wide range of blogs too.

Samsung will now motivate specification of content in blogs to encourage writers which will not only mean development but also job opportunities for writers.
